Okay, so you might know that the mail faerie delivered Ruby Red by Kersten Gier to me last week, and I promised to let you know what I thought.
So here goes. Over all, I loved it. It was the only book I've ever read where as soon as I finished the last page, I immediately went back to the beginning and started reading it all over again. Strange? Yes, but here's why.
Ms Gier does an amazing job of creating full bodied characters, terrific dialogue, a well established setting and creating mystery. There are a lot of characters to get to know and many times in the front end of the book characters are revealing key information, and important names are being dropped, but you don't know that you're being given keys and info and so, if you're like me, the details don't stay with you. When I started re-reading, I recognized these clues. Again, if you're like me, you'll forget entirely about the prologue that didn't make any sense, until you read it again after reading the epilogue.
If I were giving the book a starred review I would give this a strong 4.5 out of 5. The reason I can't give it a five, is because it never really ended. I have the feeling this manuscript started out being much longer, and the editor said, let's make it three books, and we'll end the first book right here. What the hay?
Now that I'm re-reading it, I'm floored by all the threads that were left untied by the end of the first book. I understand that, when writing a series it's common to leave a couple threads loose for the second and third book, but all the threads are loose here. I least that's what it feels like. I can't think of one main question raised that was answered satisfactorily.
For example, and I'll be vague so as to not spoil for those who haven't read, but if you have read, you'll know what I'm talking about. What's the significance to the item Gwyneth took from the dark room in the past to give to her friend Lesley in the present? Nothing ever came of that. What about James and the little boy Robert? Are they more than just elaborate set pieces? And why didn't Gwyneth pass the message from Robert on to Dr. White--he was with her at the time? Or Mr. George's mention of the mute man? (I bet you don't remember that one unless you've read it twice). After all the talk about finding the midwife, she's never found. And what gives with the scene mentioned on the jacket flap where Gwyneth witnesses her doppelganger kissing a boy in the past she's soon to meet in the future? There is no other connection to that scene in this book!!
But still, you have to read this--it's just that good. I can't wait until Sapphire Blue is out. Honestly.
Have you read it? What did you think? (Please no spoilers in the comments).

No I have not read it but I agree with your point on loose ends. Their is a difference between loose ends and dead ends. Thanks for the review though. :)

Don't know this book, but really like the cover.

Not read it. I'm currently reading the autobiogrphay of darts player Eric Bristow. I don't think you'd like it.
ReplyDeleteI KNEW you'd love it. I had exactly the same response to all the "loose" ends. There was a staggering amount of unresolved puzzles.I was backtracking and re-tracing my steps because I was concerned I had missed something. I am by nature a problem solver and unraveller which is probably why I loved it! She kept me interested and searching. Looking for those elusive connections.I am completely and utterly on the hook..which is truly enjoyable and surprisingly welcome! Desperate for the next one!
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm super excited to read Ruby Red now. I have it in my TBR pile and I plan to read it soon. My current WiP is a time travel, so I'm trying to read any other TT YA books out there.
ReplyDeleteJules - I believe the ends are loose not dead, and despite that, RR is a very enjoyable read.
ReplyDeleteMood - The cover is gorgeous, I agree.
Tony - Actually, I just did a bit of research about the game of darts for my latest wip, so I have a little more appreciation for the game, however, you're probably right about me not getting lost in that book. :)
Juanita - Ha! Yes, I do love it. I can't believe I'm actually reading it again, back to back!! All the mysteries woven into the story drive me crazy in a good way. I really love the character Gwyneth, and I knew I'd be falling for Gideon by the end of the book :)
ReplyDeleteMelissa - If you write time travel, you'll adore Ruby Red. I'm a writer of time travel as well, and I'm totally inspired (and a little intimidated). It has also inspired me to put more thought into my character of my latest wip which isn't TT. So, any book that inspires you to be a better writer is worth reading!
I haven't read it, but now I've got to! Thanks for this, I'm adding it to my list.
ReplyDeletemy first thought is I really DO have to change my title... The current MS is ROUGE, second installment tentatively VIOLET... this is FAR too similar.
ReplyDeleteBut the book sounds fantastic. I can't wait to read it~ :o) <3
LTM - Well, the second installment in Ruby Red is Sapphire Blue, so I don't know, it is in the blue/purple family...it's a toss up :)
ReplyDeleteI had the same feeling about a lack of ending. I almost felt I didn't read a book, I read the first third of one. And that, frankly, is annoying.
ReplyDeleteI also thought that the author withholds too much information. I guess this is part of the puzzle but it made it hard for me to really get into the book.
This sounds kind of negative but actually I enjoyed the book!
Sounds like it's a good book to study and enjoy! Although, I must admit it's one of my pet peeves when too many loose ends are left for the next book.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Elle. I am adding Ruby Red to my to-be-read pile.
ReplyDeleteI am nearly finished with this book and I agree with you, it was devastatingly delicious! Vague, though that was made clear when first say the little boy and never told Dr. Frankenstein about it, wouldn't he want to know? On the other, I wouldn't, so whatever I let it slide. The thing I strongly disliked about this book is that the girl would not stick up for herself, I mean seriously Aunt Glenda get over it already, she's a child its not like she killed Charlotte. Other than that is was so adventurous that the little annoyances fled my mind just as soon as they entered. Good review, I have a book blog and a poetry blog you might be interested in.
