I'm author ELLE STRAUSS and welcome to my website!

I write fun, lower Young Adult (teen) fiction to do with whimsical things like time-travel, fairies and merfolk.

When my serious side peeks out, she's called LEE STRAUSS. She likes to write upper YA about real things that have happened in the past, or made up things that could quite possibly happen in the future.

This blog is about books, mine and other fab authors', but occasionally I'll share about other topics.

Thanks for dropping by!

Riding the NaNo Wake

I'm not officially doing NaNo this year, but I am going to write. A lot. More than in the previous two months, which as far as new writing goes, has been dismal.

So even though I'm not doing NaNo I'm going to ride the NaNo wave. All those people in the NaNo boat? I'm riding on their momentum, their energy...because I can!

this is not me

I was going to jump back into a half finished draft of the companion book for Clockwise, but now I'm all stoked to write a short story based on a few of the characters from Clockwise. (My fans want to know what happened next to the characters they fell in love with. I love saying my fans--getting notes from readers make my day--anywho, off topic here).

Actually, short stories scare me. I don't know why, but I find them more frightening than writing full length novels. Maybe because I'm afraid I won't have enough words to develop something gripping. But, I'm going to give it a go. And with the renewed opportunity to sell short stories as e-books, it just makes sense to me to add more variety to my e-shelf.

So who's with me? Are you doing NaNo, or are you riding the wave?

  1. I am definitely doing NaNo this year. I'm a nervous newbie who clocked in 200 words short of my first day's goal. But in my defense, I had a coughing chipmunk to soothe :-)

So I encourage you to write, write and writer some more!

  2. Riding the wave! Going to make it my goal to finish at least one of my incomplete mss this month.

Kudos to you for attempting a short story! They scare me, too :-)

  3. I'm in that boat at the far end of the cove, with my fishing pole and a cooler full of beer. I enjoy watching the all the activity on the lake, but it's not for me. :)

  4. I'm riding the wave. I started a short story last November and it turned out to be novel. It's one year later and I'm still not done this novel. I'm making it my goal to finish it this month. I started another short story and guess what? It wants to be a novel. I can't do short stories!

  5. I'm riding the wave with you. I'm in revisions and massive wordcounts just don't make sense for that. My goal is to finish revisions by the end of Nov. fingers crossed.

  6. I started a new novel back in September, so I'm riding the NaNo wave with it. I hope to be at 50K by the end of the month, though.

  7. NaNo, just to see if I can. After day 1, I'm already "behind". :P
On this "wave riding" stuff, you guys could all still sign up and officially designate yourselves as "rebels" (there's a NaNo forum just for those). Just for fun (which is what NaNo is all about, no?).

  16. Kind of a combo of the two. I'm doing NaNo, but if I don't finish, it will still be a win. I love the energy of NaNo. It's so infectious. :)

  17. Not doing it this year. I'm in the middle of my WIP and don't want to stop. So instead I'm going to try to get to 50,000 words. (at a little over 26,000 now) Cheating, I know. I'm just so damn busy, I'm lucky if I get to write at all. Good luck to you! Happy writing.
