I write Young Adult and Middle Grade fiction. I'm a married mom of four, and live in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, famous for beaches and vineyards. I'm fond of Lindt's sea salt dark chocolate and hiking in good weather. Friday Four or Five - And Free Song Friday

1. This week's free song is Wasting Time [3:58]
Written about 4 years ago. A little romantic bluegrass.

2. It's December and that means another year almost gone. 2011 was a surprise for me when it came to my writing goals. I ended up losing an agent for the second time and deciding to self-publish. I'm still trying to process the whole thing, emotionally and practically. Wearing a publisher's hat along with a writer's hat is entirely different than wearing the writer's hat alone. I'm a little nervous to re-read what my New Years goals were last year and not so sure what they're going to be this year. There's enough TNT in this point for it's own post, or two, so I'll leave it for now.

3. No, I'm not ready for Christmas. There is not one decoration to be seen, but my daughter and I have a date to go on our traditional outing to the tree farm where we'll pick a tree and wait in the barn with a cup of hot chocolate while someone else cuts it down. I did a lot of shopping on line this year and presents are starting to arrive in the mail, so I'm liking that.

4. Our friends from Romania are coming today for our annual update meeting. I've blogged about our involvement there before but you can check out www.hftn.ro if you'd like to know more.

5. Paper Artist Calvin Nicholls creates these art pieces with paper. Just paper (thus the reason he's called a Paper Artist :). Amazing.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Oh, the Romanian outreach just tugged at my heart. I've been wondering about what sort of a Christmas charity I wanted to contribute to this year, and Romania's always had a special place in my heart ever since a good friend went out there several years ago to help at an orphanage for a month or so. Thank you for sharing the link!

And I hear you on trying to wear the writer's hat AND publisher's hat. When I sent the final draft of the PB MS to my illustrator, I suddenly panicked, realizing NO other editor was going to look at it, NO other critical eyes other than the ones I'd already borrowed from critique partners, and any errors and mistakes in the final product were going to be mine, all mine. And that's even before thinking about printing and marketing and talking to bookstores about stocking it and dealing with online retailers and ...

I need to shut up before I panic myself more.

  2. Christmas kind of snuck up on us also. The decorations will probably be finished by this weekend (which is no easy task), and because we haven't done much shopping yet I'm afraid we won't get as many deals. Oh well...it is what it is. :)

  3. No-one seems to be ready for Christmas so you are in good company.

  4. E Louise - Yes, Romania has a way of grabbing hold of the heart.

And self-publishing is not for the faint of heart, that's for sure! :)

  5. The hedgehog! I adore the hedgehog.
And thank you (and Norm, of course), once again for another lovely song.

  6. I was captivated by those paper renditions. Still floored actually. Such beautiful detail leaves me in awe.

  7. Ah internet shopping is such a wonderful thing isn't it? Frees up time for all that decorating you need to do. ;) I know exactly what you mean about wearing two hats as a self-pubbed author. I'm hoping to gain enough success to be able to alleviate that stress for some and go live with a special project of mine next year... Fingers crossed!

  8. I've finished shopping, but that's it. No decorating yet - that will be done by next weekend, I hope. And at some point I have to wrap. I may go buy bargain bags and tissue and just stuff things in.

Hope your weekend is going great!
