Monday Musings - A Jar of Crap

Our friends from Romania came for the weekend for our annual Romania project budget meeting. We always have a lots of laughs when we get together and this time was no exception. They even brought back a jar of canned Crap!

Aren't you just dying to have a taste of that? ha! Actually, it's carp eggs, a lesser type of caviar, and no, I didn't eat any.

The paperwork behind is the year update of what our organization has done in the medical field in the villages around Brasov with the recent acquisition of a mobile medical unit. A major discovery has been in the area of TB testing, where over 50% of 300 people tested were found to be positive. Because they were diagnosed before severe symptoms had set in, the treatment is shorter and non-disruptive, so important for families where the bread-maker can't afford to miss even one day's work.

Another great outcome of the year is another successful medical training conference where doctors from the west teach doctors from the east how to perform tricky congenital malformation correction surgery. Many children in eastern Europe are still being born with defects as a result of the Chernobyl disaster. Over eighty children have had free corrective surgery by participating in conferences.

Another great thing coming in 2012 for me is the opportunity to spend two months in the fall in Brasov teaching English to the children in a couple farm villages. I'll also be helping out with eye testing with the mobile medical unit. I'm really excited to participate in this.

This post isn't specifically writing related, but it does fit with the concept that you need to get out and do stuff, in order to keep creativity alive. What kind of none-writing "stuff" do you do to keep your creative juices flowing?

  1. What a wonderful opportunity. And what an experience to teach and work with the kids. What a blessing for all of you!

  2. Wow, what an amazing opportunity! You will have to blog some of your adventures over there for those of us living vicariously through you :-)

Creative stuff I do that's not writing ... cooking and baking, on an everyday basis. I love to create in the kitchen! Also quilting when I have time. I've lately taken to creating my own patterns, which is challenging but fun. I'm not very good at it yet (I keep getting the proportions wrong), but each one is improved a little bit on the one before. I take that as a win!

  3. Oh wow! What a wonderful thing you are doing. I hope we'll hear more about your good works. As for other things I do that aren't related to writing... recycling and picking up trash along the roadside...Not much, but every little (litter) bit helps.

  4. Laura - It is a blessing!

E Louise - I admire people who like to bake and cook, neither of which I'm good at. I think quilting is really cool.

Bish - Recycling is so important and I think it's awesome you're helping to keep our planet clean. We all need to do that.

  7. This is a relevant post - everything we do, see and partake in influences our thoughts which in turn influences our writing.

I have a large variety of interests that enrich my life too - it's wonderful being involved in more then just my own little sphere.

    Great post!

  8. I must admit, I'd be afraid to try that...

Great post, and an excellent reminder that we need to be more than the sum of our writing. What we are passionate about is part of us, and therefore our writing. :)

  9. That's wonderful, your involvement in the Romania project.

Hmmm...what do I do outside of my daughter and my writing? Wow, that's actually a good question. I tutor a few kids on reading and writing. But there's that writing again. Hmmm...

  10. I must say.. I'm impressed. You get what you give, my friend. My admiration included.

Right now, out is what I am. Family is keeping me from the blog world.
